AAUW Alabama's Educational Foundation Community Action Grant, Ready to RunTM, is aimed at training qualified Alabama women for leadership roles in government.
Co-Directors Dr. Elizabeth Hendrix and Mildred Lanier report that participant recruitment targets the 105 House districts, 35 Senate districts, and 67 counties in Alabama with concentration in the geographical areas of AAUW of Alabama’s ten active branches and other major cities in Alabama.
It is anticipated 150 women will enroll in Ready to RunTM with 20% running for an elected government position in 2008 and 2009 combined. In addition, Ready to RunTM is expected to increase the number of women running for an elected government position in 2010 by another 5%.
The Ready to RunTM team collected and compiled research with Alabama Women’s Initiative for current data for the project base. The Ready to RunTM project is in partnership with Rutgers University, Eagleton Institute of Politics, Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP), New Brunswick, NJ. The first training offered included five all day training sessions from January to June 2008 in Birmingham and Huntsville, AL. The next one-day intensive training is modeled after CAWP’s agenda and will be held at Silver Lakes, near Gadsden, AL, on Saturday, October 25, 2008. Other tentative one-day intensive training sessions are anticipated in the fall 2008 in Marion and Mobile, AL. A tentative three-day training session is being considered in Decatur, AL in 2009.
